It’s not uncommon to hear that our corner of the world blazes out of summer’s unrelenting heat, all but completely bypasses fall, and dives right into the bone-chilling season of blustery days and ice storms. As we plunge into winter, this is the perfect time to explain R44 attic insulation and why it is a standard feature of our green home construction in Oklahoma.

You likely know that insulation, in its many forms, is used by custom home builders to help regulate temperature and make your home more energy-efficient, as well as comfortable. When installed correctly, it can save you up to 20% in heating and cooling costs. Proper installation is determined by location in the home, geographic region, building codes, and the feature that inspired this blog post: recommended R-values.

The “R” stands for “reduction” and it denotes how much the insulation material can reduce the level of heat that flows between the outside and inside of your home. The R value is determined by the regional climate and the type of HVAC system used. As the R value increases, the heat flow decreases. With this, the United States is divided into eight zones with recommended R values, based on climate. To clarify, Zone 1 has the lowest recommended R values and includes the warmest regions in the states such as southern Florida and Hawaii; and Zone 8 has the highest R values and includes the most frigid areas, such as select interior boroughs of Alaska. Oklahoma, biting cold as it may get each year, lands decidedly near the lower end at Zone 3.

What does this mean? Well, for the uninsulated attic of new homes in Oklahoma, the R value should be at least 30. As the top OKC metro luxury home builders, our goal is to never settle for the minimum, and as such, R44 attic insulation is standard in the homes that we build. By exceeding the code requirements, we not only make your home operate more efficiently and help maintain your family’s comfort, but ultimately save you money. Now this truly does sound like a dream home, doesn’t it?
